When the City Still Shines

Toy Room City never slept — not really.

Even at the quiet end of the day, the four crayon towers of the Crayon Dollhouse glowed: red, yellow, blue, and green, tall and proud in the center of everything. The towers weren't just pretty. They were home.

Crayon Pinocchio stood on the top balcony of the blue tower, black sunglasses on, supersuit crisp, giant rainbow crayon resting against his wooden shoulder. Below him, the city hummed.

Benny the goat doll was chasing Marta the deer around the fountain. Two fluffy sheep dolls — Pip and Wren — were arguing over a tiny wool hat.

"It's MINE!" Pip squeaked.

"It fits ME better!" Wren shot back.

Pinocchio laughed, a quick wooden knock of a sound. He loved this city. Every ridiculous corner of it.

He leaned on the railing, carved nose pointed toward the rooftops.

Far off, at the edge of the city, something caught the light. A shimmer. Faint. Like the air itself had sneezed glitter.

The Parrot Who Talks Too Much

The shimmer at the edge of the city wasn't waiting around.

It moved.

Pinocchio launched off the balcony, rainbow crayon in hand, and shot through the air toward the city's eastern wall. He landed on the roof of the old market — a low, wide building where the stuffed animals traded buttons and ribbons on Sundays — just in time to watch the shimmer arrive.

It wasn't a shimmer anymore.

It was a blizzard. A full, roaring blizzard — except instead of snow, it threw glitter. Thick, silver, wall-to-wall glitter, howling down the street like something furious.

And sitting on the market's weather vane, completely unbothered, was a bright green parrot doll with a cracked plastic beak and one googly eye that spun when he talked.

"Oh, it's coming," the parrot announced cheerfully. "Told you it would. Told everybody. Nobody listens to Crackers."

Pinocchio squinted at him. "You knew about this?"

"Knew about it?" Crackers ruffled his wings. "Kid, I wished for it."

Below them, the first wave of glitter hit the fountain. Benny the stuffed goat froze mid-step, locked solid in a shell of sparkling silver.
