Sketchpad City never sat still.

Holographic signs blinked above the market stalls. Tram cars hummed along rails painted to look like ruled notebook lines. Humans and humanoid deer weaved through the streets together, antlers and baseball caps bumping past delivery drones and food carts.

And right in the center of it all, Pen Doe Tower rose up — tall, sleek, and shaped exactly like a pen standing on its tip.

Pen Doe stood on the observation platform near the top, her dark blue and grey supersuit catching the afternoon breeze. Her big dark eyes scanned the city below. Everything looked fine. Orderly. Perfectly sketched in.

She tapped her earpiece. "Nothing unusual, Blotch."

"You sound disappointed," said her AI system through the com.

"I'm not," she said quickly.

But she leaned a little further over the railing anyway, studying the far edge of the city — the older, quieter side — where a narrow alley disappeared between two forgotten buildings.

The Alley at the Edge of Everything

Pen Doe dropped off the observation platform and flew low — low enough that her boots nearly grazed the tram rails.

She wasn't on a call. Blotch hadn't flagged anything. She was just following that alley with her eyes the way you follow a sound you can't quite place.

She landed at the mouth of it. Two old brick buildings leaned close on either side, like they were sharing a secret.

The alley was longer than it looked. Near the far end, sitting cross-legged on a flattened delivery crate, was a small kid — a human boy, maybe nine, with round glasses and a mop of dark curly hair. He had a marker in his fist and he was drawing directly on the brick wall.

Not tagging. Not scribbling.

Pen Doe stepped closer and stopped.

The drawing covered the entire wall — floor to rooftop — in careful, sweeping lines. It was a city. A city she recognized. But in the drawing, Sketchpad City was crumbling. Buildings tilted. The pen-shaped tower cracked down the middle. And in the center of it all, something enormous was rising.
