Alastor and the Clockwork Puzzle
Listen to audiobook
Gears in Motion
Steam City greeted them with a symphony of hissing steam and clicking gears. Alastor's leg still throbbed, a victim of his unfortunate fall during his inevitable tussle with Vox. Feeling a bit out of sorts due to his season of heat, Alastor's crimson jacket gleamed under the whimsical steampunk lights.
“We have to find some place safe,” Charlie sighed, looking around. Her gentle demeanor clashed with the vibrant city.
Angel Dust twirled his umbrella, unfazed. “Oh, come on, Chuck! It's just like a movie set!”
Vaggie rolled her eyes but remained alert. “Less sightseeing, more hiding.”
Then, from the maze of pipes and clock towers, emerged Jinn Sparks. A clockwork doll, her eyes spun to focus on them, shimmering with curiosity. Steam City had never seen a creature like Alastor before.
Jinn approached, fascinated, “What brings such a peculiar ensemble to our city?”
“An accident,” replied Alastor, attempting a charming grin through his discomfort.
“Ah, well, I might be late sometimes, but I wouldn’t miss this for the world,” Jinn chuckled, her gears whirring softly as she spoke. It was clear, amidst the chaos, that friendships were already being forged as the mystery of time awaited discovery.
Gears of Curiosity
As the steamy mist wove tendrils around them, Jinn led Alastor and his friends through the maze of clock towers towards her workshop. The city's vibrant hum tickled their ears, a symphony of cogs and gears that never paused.
"What's that light over there?" Angel Dust's curiosity peeked through his voice, pointing his umbrella toward a brilliant glow just beyond.
"Ah, the Grand Lantern," Jinn replied, her wooden skin catching the warm glow as she moved. "Not to worry, that's the heart of this city's power."
Despite the swirling chaos in Alastor's mind, he felt inexplicably drawn to the complex beauty of their surroundings. It was like his own chaotic energy had found its match.
"Here we are," Jinn announced, opening the creaky door to her workshop. It was a world of brass and whimsy, contraptions stacked higher than Alastor's antlers.
Upon a cluttered table, a clockwork map lay unfurled, its intricacies catching Vaggie's eye. "What's this?" she asked, leaning in closer.
"An enigma," Jinn mused, her eyes, filled with gears, twinkling like stars. "This map doesn't just lead through space, but through time as well."
"Time travel?" Charlie whispered, the weight of their secretive adventure settling in her voice.
Before more could be said, the clanking of heavy metal footsteps approached, each reverberation louder than the last.
The door swung open, revealing a rugged figure: Professor Corvus, an inventor of ill-repute in Steam City, a shadowy character whose intentions were masked by a wide-brimmed hat. He peered at them, his eyes hidden, and said, "A curious ensemble indeed."
