The Hidden Clue
Kai slouched in his usual corner of the school library, flipping absentmindedly through a dusty old history textbook. A strange, yellowed paper peeked from between the pages. He pulled it out, curious.
"What could this be?" he pondered, eyebrows raised.
The paper revealed itself as a map, with lines crisscrossing like a windy maze and an X marked at the clock tower.
"Treasure, at school? Under the moon? This is better than algebra homework any day!" Kai's eyes twinkled with excitement.
Quickly stuffing the map into his jean pocket, Kai felt the familiar thrill of adventure creep up his spine. He could just imagine the moon shining down on his quest.
As he turned to leave, the map slipped from his pocket, fluttering to the floor. He reached down to grab it, only to see it drift down the stairway leading to the school's shadowy basement. Kai hesitated, glancing back at the empty corridor.
"Looks like I'd better follow it after all," he murmured, heart pounding as he headed down into the unknown.
Basement Shadows
Kai crept gingerly down the basement stairs, each step creaking a ghostly warning. His heart thrummed alongside every echo in the shadowy gloom below. “Just a map, Kai. You've got this,” he reassured himself, fingers brushing the cool stone wall guiding him deeper.
Suddenly, the grating noise of a mop being dragged echoed, sending shivers up his spine. An old man with an unkempt beard and sharp blue eyes appeared, pushing a wheeled bucket. "Lost?" he asked with a drawl, seemingly more curious than concerned.
Kai hesitated, then nodded. "Sort of. I'm looking for something... important."
The janitor narrowed his eyes at the map in Kai’s grip. “A map, eh? Maps can lead to...unexpected places."
Kai raised an eyebrow. Just what did this janitor know?
Meanwhile, in the sunny kitchen above, Lucy Wolfshadow hummed, scraping dough into cookies her own special way. Kai’s sister wasn’t just any baker; she sprinkled grated carrots into her treats, grinning at the unusual twist.
Eager to solve the mystery and return to normal, Kai pondered Mr. Feldman's cryptic advice, while upstairs, Lucy's cookies began their curious bake.
