The City That Never Blinks

Sketchpad City never slept.

From the top floor of Pen Doe Tower, the whole place looked like a circuit board left on overnight — shop signs buzzing in electric blue, delivery drones zipping between rooftops, holographic street ads cycling through cheerful jingles nobody asked for.

Pen Doe loved every noisy, overcrowded pixel of it.

She stood at the wide curved window, her dark blue supersuit still on from an afternoon patrol, her giant retractable pen clipped to her back. She pressed her white muzzle against the glass and watched two humanoid deer below argue over a broken vending machine.

"It took my credits AND kept my noodles," one of them announced to anyone who would listen.

Pen laughed quietly.

Her city communicator chimed. It was Sketch, her city AI — a cheerful voice that ran most of the tower's systems.

"Evening, Pen. Everything's calm tonight."

"Famous last words," she said.

Static and Sparks

The vending machine argument outside was still going when every screen in Sketchpad City died at once.

Not flickered. Not glitched. Just — off.

Pen pressed her nose back against the window. The electric blue shop signs were gone. The delivery drones, which never stopped moving, hung in the air like confused birds, then dropped straight into rooftop bins and parked platforms with loud, clanging thuds.

"Sketch?" Pen said.

Nothing.

Her communicator was silent. The tower's lights switched to dim backup power — a pale yellow glow that made everything look slightly sick.

Then the machines started moving again. But wrong.

Down on the street, the broken vending machine — the very one those two deer had been yelling at — lurched forward on its own. It pushed one of them right off the curb. Then it turned and started rolling toward the center of the block, smooth and deliberate, like it knew exactly where it was going.

Three other machines followed it.

Pen grabbed her pen from her back. The neon tip lit up instantly.

"Okay," she said quietly. "That's new."
