The Forgotten Chemistry Challenge
Listen to audiobook
A Cloud Overhead
Sunshine bounced down the crowded New York streets, her bright high ponytail swaying like the city's rhythm. Fresh from school, she relished the mix of city sounds and smells—a symphony all its own. Her eyes sparkled with curiosity. As she strolled, a fluttering piece of paper danced with the wind and landed at her feet.
She paused in the swirl of passers-by, pulling the paper from the tiny whirl it had created near the pavement. It was an invitation, but not just any. "The Annual Chemistry Challenge," it read, in bold, swirling letters.
"Oh, what's this now?" she mumbled, her interest piqued.
At that moment, someone jostled her elbow. Sunshine turned to see an old lady with wild gray hair and sparkling blue eyes, who seemed just as random as the paper's arrival. "Ah, dear, you’ve found my invitation," the woman chuckled like someone full of secrets.
"Who are you?" Sunshine asked, holding the invitation tightly.
"I'm Madam Whisp," the woman replied, her voice both gentle and mysterious. "And I see potential in you, young one."
The words hovered in the air, and Sunshine felt a flicker of something unexpected—a challenge wrapped in the unknown. The city buzzed around them, but, for a moment, it was just her and Madam Whisp, standing in the open yet cloaked in curiosity.
The Unseen Test
Sunshine clutched the flier tightly as she descended into the dimly lit subway station. The roar of the trains seemed to swallow the rhythmic chatter of commuters, but she was lost in thoughts of what lay ahead.
"A chemistry competition? Why me?" she mused while stepping onto the train. Yet a spark of excitement flared through her.
At home, surrounded by textbooks, Sunshine found her thoughts drifting back to Madam Whisp. She'd always been a curious learner, dabbling in every subject, but chemistry had never thrilled her like this.
She reached her room and nearly tripped over her brother Tyron's gadgets sprawled on the floor. "Watch it," Tyron grinned, flashing his toothy smile.
On her desk lay a small, unmarked envelope. It felt out of place, yet intriguing. Inside, she found the official entry forms, complete with peculiar rules. "Inventiveness and teamwork required," it said cryptically.
Tyron, noticing her furrowed brow, suggested, "Why not try those apps I made?"
Sunshine glanced at Tyron, admiring his knack for blending tech with creativity. Maybe this challenge was about more than test tubes and formulas.
