The Phantom Pumpkin Factory
Listen to audiobook
Orange Glow
Whisper Wind spun through the metal halls of Orion Station, her colorful whirlwind form dancing past windows showing Earth's blue curve below. She loved Halloween night here among the stars.
"Look at all the decorations!" she giggled, swirling around plastic skeletons and fake spider webs. The crew had done a wonderful job making the space station spooky.
As she floated near the old factory section, something made her stop. Strange orange lights flickered behind the thick glass doors. The factory had been closed for months.
"That's odd," she whispered, pressing her transparent face against the cold window. The lights pulsed like heartbeats, growing brighter and dimmer in a rhythm she'd never seen before.
Her big green eyes widened as shadows moved inside.
The Baker's Warning
Whisper Wind pressed closer to the factory window. The orange lights suddenly went out completely.
"Oh!" she gasped, spinning backward.
Heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway behind her. She turned to see Chef Martinez, the station's head baker, walking toward her with flour-covered hands. His dark eyes looked worried.
"You shouldn't be here, little wind spirit," he said, glancing nervously at the factory doors. "Strange things have been happening. The ovens in my kitchen keep turning on by themselves. Orange smoke pours out, but there's no fire inside."
The lights flickered back on inside the factory, brighter than before.
"Look!" Whisper pointed with a swirl of her colorful form.
Through the glass, they both saw something impossible. Dozens of glowing pumpkins floated through the air, spinning slowly like planets.
