A Slip in Time
“Yu! Wait!” called her mother, but Yu, her twin braids swaying, was already darting into the vibrant crowd of Shanghai. She loved the bustling streets full of chatter and the sweet smells of food stalls.
“Yu, did you know about the upcoming marriage?” whispered her friend Mei excitedly, catching up. Yu stopped mid-step, wide-eyed. “Marriage? But I’m only ten!” She puffed her cheeks, half annoyed, half curious.
Just then, a friendly vendor with a cart brimming with delectable treats waved them over. “Try something new, little miss!” he chuckled, offering her peculiar foreign candy.
As she reached for it, a whiff of exotic spices made her dizzy and, in a blink, the lively streets transformed—from Shanghai’s buzzing to Hanoi’s intriguing buzz.
Yu gasped, stunned. Around her, unfamiliar colors and sounds beckoned her to explore, sparking an adventure she never expected.
Lost in Hanoi
Yu stood dazed in the midst of Hanoi's lively streets. People passed by with baskets brimming with colorful fruits and flowers, their voices a melody of a language Yu yearned to understand.
"Hello, are you lost?" piped a young local boy, Tien, causing Yu to spin around in surprise.
"I think so... I was in Shanghai just a moment ago," she replied, her voice filled with confusion.
Tien nodded, his eyes twinkling with curiosity. "Here, take this—it's a leaf boat." He handed her a miniature boat made from woven leaves, its craftsmanship mesmerizing.
Yu examined the delicate model. "Did you make this?"
"Yes! I love building things," Tien said proudly, leading her to a quieter street where they could escape the chaos.
As they talked, Yu learned about Vietnamese customs and food, finding herself smiling despite her predicament. Suddenly, the sky darkened, and rain began to pour. Laughing, Tien pulled her under a bright awning, and the two new friends watched the rain paint the streets with vibrant reflections.
