The Perfect Crack
Listen to audiobook
Golden Morning
Sarah's alarm buzzed at exactly 6:30 AM, just like every other perfect morning in Maple City. She rolled out of her perfectly made bed and stretched her arms toward the ceiling.
"Today's going to be amazing," she whispered to her reflection in the mirror.
Her blonde hair caught the morning sunlight streaming through her bedroom window. She picked out her favorite pink sweater and matching skirt from her organized closet.
Downstairs, her mom had already prepared golden pancakes with maple syrup.
"Morning, sweetheart," Mom said, kissing Sarah's forehead. "Ready for another great day at school?"
"Always am!" Sarah grinned, grabbing her backpack.
The walk to Maple Elementary was lined with trees showing off their red and gold leaves. Sarah waved to neighbors and smiled at everyone she passed.
At school, her best friends Emma and Lily rushed over immediately.
"Sarah! Did you finish the math homework?" Emma asked.
"Of course she did. Sarah finishes everything perfectly," Lily laughed.
Unexpected Changes
At lunch, Sarah sat at her usual table with Emma and Lily. The cafeteria buzzed with its normal energy.
"So, how was your morning?" Emma asked, opening her sandwich.
"Perfect as always," Sarah smiled, but something felt different today. A strange cramping sensation had started in her stomach during math class.
Lily giggled. "Did you see Jake looking at you during assembly? He's totally going to ask you to the fall dance."
Sarah blushed. Jake was the cutest boy in fifth grade, and everyone knew they were practically boyfriend and girlfriend already.
"Maybe," Sarah said, shifting uncomfortably in her seat. The cramping was getting worse.
Emma leaned closer. "You look a little pale. Are you okay?"
Before Sarah could answer, a sharp pain shot through her lower abdomen. She doubled over slightly, pressing her hand against her stomach.
"Ow," she whispered.
"Sarah!" Lily reached over. "What's wrong?"
The pain came in waves now, making her feel dizzy. This wasn't like any stomachache she'd ever had before.
"I think I need to see the nurse," Sarah managed to say, standing up shakily.
