The Singing Vines
Listen to audiobook
The Quiet Corner
Dr. Stella Vega pushed through the thick curtain of green leaves, her white lab coat catching on thorny branches. The Bumblevine Jungle buzzed with life around her - parrots screeched overhead while monkeys chattered in the canopy.
"Another failed experiment," she muttered, checking her tablet. Three months of research, and still nothing to show her university back home. Her space boots squelched in the soft, mossy ground as she ducked under a particularly aggressive vine that seemed to swing right at her head.
A peculiar sound made her stop. Was that... humming?
She tilted her head, adjusting her glasses. The noise came again - a low, melodic hum that definitely wasn't coming from any bird or monkey she knew. It seemed to drift from deeper in the jungle, where the vines grew thicker and stranger.
"Probably just the wind," she told herself, but her feet were already carrying her toward the sound. Her dark eyes sparkled with curiosity as she pushed forward into the green maze.
The Silent Jungle
The humming grew louder as Dr. Stella pushed deeper into the jungle. Her glasses fogged up from the humid air, and she wiped them clean with her lab coat sleeve.
"This is ridiculous," she muttered, but kept walking toward the sound.
The vines here twisted in impossible patterns, creating natural archways overhead. Some hung so low she had to duck. Others swayed gently, as if dancing to music only they could hear.
Then she saw it.
A small hummingbird hovered near a cluster of bright purple vines. Its emerald feathers caught the filtered sunlight as it darted between the plants. But something was wrong - the bird looked exhausted, its tiny wings beating frantically.
Dr. Stella stepped closer and gasped. The hummingbird was trapped! Sticky sap from the vines had caught one of its delicate wings.
"Oh no, little one," she whispered, pulling out her emergency kit from her coat pocket.
As she carefully freed the bird with tweezers, the humming sound suddenly stopped. The jungle fell eerily quiet.
The hummingbird chirped once and flew away. But now Dr. Stella noticed something alarming - all the vines around her were turning brown.
