The Murmuring Walls

The underground graffiti metro was a kaleidoscope of colors dancing across the concrete walls, a secret world pulsing with life. Sage Shadowfoot stood at the bustling platform, his almond-shaped eyes darting from one spectacular mural to another. Teenagers posed for selfies, while an old man nodded in rhythm with the humming trains, a living gallery where each brush stroke told a tale.

"Did you see this one?" Sage heard a voice nearby. A girl with curly red hair gestured at a particularly striking swirl of hues. "It’s almost alive!"

Intrigued, Sage approached, his curiosity piqued. He reached out, fingertips brushing across a glowing patch of paint that seemed to throb with energy. Instantly, his vision blurred and he felt time stretching like elastic.

He jerked his hand back, heart racing. "What was that?" he muttered to himself, excitement mingling with wonder. This was no ordinary artwork, and Sage knew deep down—it was just the beginning of something extraordinary.

Sage blinked, shaking off the lingering distortion in his vision. The murals seemed to pulse with a new intensity, as if thriving on his curiosity.

Beside him, the girl with curly red hair, Aria, watched with raised brows. "You look like you've seen a ghost," she teased, her bright green eyes alight with playful skepticism.

"These patches," Sage said, motioning to the shimmering spots of paint, "I think they're more than just art." His voice held a mix of excitement and caution.

Aria crossed her arms. "Oh, really? So, they're magical portals, are they?"

Sage chuckled, the tension breaking. "I don't know about portals, but something strange is definitely going on. I saw... people, but when I look again, there's nothing."

"Show me," Aria insisted, intrigued despite herself.

Together, they explored the platform, tracing patches with their fingers. As they did, Sage caught glimpses of bustling street scenes that faded as quickly as they appeared.

"Okay, this is weird," Aria admitted, the skepticism in her voice replaced by genuine curiosity. Just then, Sage caught sight of a shadowy figure watching them from afar. Before he could react, the figure melted into the crowd, leaving behind an unsettling sense that they were not alone.
