The Paper with Surprises

Sayuri bounced down the stone steps of her grandmother's house, her pastel pink hoodie fluttering in the morning breeze. The village of Shirakawa stretched before her like a picture book, with traditional houses dotting the emerald valley.

"Sayuri!" called Mrs. Tanaka from across the narrow street. The elderly woman waved a bright yellow paper in the air. "Come see this!"

Sayuri skipped over, her pleated skirt swishing with each step. Mrs. Tanaka's wrinkled face crinkled into a smile as she handed over the flyer.

"The annual cooking contest," Mrs. Tanaka explained. "First prize is a golden ladle and bragging rights for the whole year."

Sayuri's chestnut brown eyes widened as she read the details. She had watched her grandmother cook countless times, but she had never tried making anything complicated herself.

"I should enter," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

From the nearby cedar trees came a soft rustling sound, as if the forest itself was listening.

The Glowing Visitors

Sayuri clutched the yellow flyer against her chest as she walked toward the village center. The rustling from the cedar trees grew louder, and she glanced over her shoulder.

"Just the wind," she whispered to herself.

Near the fountain, she spotted a woman with short black hair arranging cooking supplies on a wooden table. The woman wore a navy apron over her simple dress and had kind brown eyes.

"Excuse me," Sayuri said, approaching cautiously. "Are you part of the cooking contest?"

The woman looked up and smiled. "I'm Keiko, the contest organizer. You must be interested in entering."

Sayuri nodded, her hands trembling slightly as she held out the flyer.

"Wonderful! The contest is tomorrow morning. You'll need to prepare a dish using only the ingredients we provide." Keiko pointed to several baskets filled with vegetables, rice, and herbs.

Suddenly, a tiny shimmer of light danced near Sayuri's shoulder. Then another. The forest spirits had followed her.

"Oh my," Keiko said, blinking in surprise at the glowing specks. "How unusual."

Sayuri's cheeks flushed pink. The spirits were supposed to stay hidden.
