Purple Shadows in the Morning

info-banner

Yuki Sensei stepped out of her small house, purple kimono flowing behind her as she walked toward the village square. Her black eyeshadow made her serious expression look even more intimidating in the early morning light.

"Look, it's the scary lady!" whispered a little girl, tugging on her mother's sleeve.

The mother quickly pulled her daughter away, shooting nervous glances back at Yuki. This happened every morning, but it still stung. Yuki adjusted her neat hair bun and continued walking.

Near the fountain, she spotted them - twin boys with messy blonde hair racing around while their younger sister tried to keep up. The boys' hair stuck out in all directions like they'd been struck by lightning.

"Ren-kun! Riku-kun!" called a small voice. "Wait for me!"

Yuki paused, watching the chaos unfold. Ren's braces caught the sunlight as he grinned mischievously at his brother Riku, whose glasses sat crooked on his nose.

The Golden Bait

The younger sister with light black hair caught up to the twins, panting. "Nao-chan is tired!" she announced, hands on her knees.

A girl with similar black hair appeared beside her. "Keiko-chan will help!" she declared, grabbing Nao's hand.

Yuki watched the four children from across the square. Their hair looked like bird nests after a storm. She reached into her purple kimono sleeve and pulled out a small wrapped caramel.

"Ren-kun! Riku-kun!" she called out in her serious voice.

The twins froze. Riku's glasses slipped further down his nose.

"Scary lady!" Ren whispered through his braces.

"She's coming this way!" Riku squeaked.

Both boys started babbling in rapid Japanese. "Kowai! Kowai desu!"

Yuki unwrapped the caramel slowly, making sure they could see the golden candy gleaming in the sunlight. The sweet smell drifted toward them.

"Would you like some?" she asked, stepping closer.

The twins' eyes grew wide. Their younger sister Nao tugged on Keiko's sleeve. "Candy..." she whispered hopefully.

Yuki smiled slightly. Sometimes the best detective work started with the right bait.
