The Caramel Connection

Purple Shadows
Yuki Sensei swept the floor of her small hair salon, her purple kimono rustling with each movement. The morning sun cast long shadows through the paper screens. She had arranged her scissors and combs perfectly, just like every day for the past three months.
"Good morning, Yuki Sensei!" called Mrs. Tanaka from across the village square.
Yuki waved back with a hopeful smile, but Mrs. Tanaka quickly looked away and hurried past with her twin sons.
The boys peeked back at Yuki's shop. One had messy blonde hair falling over his glasses, while his twin's equally wild blonde locks bounced as he whispered something urgent in his brother's ear. Their braces caught the sunlight as they both made worried faces.
"Scary lady," she heard one of them mutter in Japanese.
Yuki's shoulders sagged. She touched the small bag of caramel candies in her kimono sleeve and sighed. Maybe today would be different.
The Puddle Problem
A sudden downpour soaked the village square. Yuki watched from her doorway as puddles formed everywhere, turning the neat pathways into messy streams.
"Oh no!" squeaked a small voice.
A little girl with black hair in pigtails stood trapped on a stone island between two large puddles. Her pink dress was already splashed with muddy water.
"Help! I can't get across!" she called out.
Yuki stepped outside, her wooden sandals clicking against the wet stones. She recognized the girl as Nao-chan, one of Mrs. Tanaka's neighbors.
"Don't worry, little one," Yuki said gently, walking carefully around the puddles.
But as she approached, Nao-chan's eyes went wide with fear. "The scary lady!" she whispered in Japanese.
Yuki stopped. Her heart sank, but she noticed something important. Nao-chan's hair was tangled and messy from the rain, and she kept scratching her head.
"Here," Yuki said softly, pulling out a wrapped caramel candy. She placed it on a dry stone between them. "Sweet treat?"
Nao-chan stared at the candy, then at Yuki's kind eyes.
