The Pencil Portal Problem
Listen to audiobook
Crystal Morning
The morning sun cast rainbow reflections across Fortress 38's crystal walls. Inside the main workshop, twenty-eight of the Super Hero Artists gathered around their newest invention—crystal pencils that sparkled like diamonds.
"These are amazing!" exclaimed Zara, the third superhero artist, holding up her pencil. The crystal tip caught the light and sent tiny rainbows dancing across her black and blue supersuit.
Marcus, the seventh artist, frowned at his pencil. "But what exactly do they do? The scientists just handed them out without explaining anything."
"Who cares?" laughed Kira, already sketching with hers. "They're beautiful and they work perfectly!"
The other artists nodded and began drawing. Their pencils moved smoothly across paper, creating brilliant lines that seemed to glow.
But Marcus noticed something strange. Where Kira had pressed hardest, tiny sparks flickered. He opened his mouth to warn her, but she was already lost in her artwork.
The sparks grew brighter.
The Workshop Surprise
A sharp crack echoed through the workshop. The sparks from Kira's pencil suddenly burst into a swirling purple vortex the size of a dinner plate, hovering just above her drawing pad.
"What did you do?" Marcus shouted, jumping back from the table.
"I don't know!" Kira dropped her crystal pencil. "I was just drawing a mountain!"
The portal pulsed and expanded. Through its shimmering surface, they could see another world—a landscape of floating rocks and upside-down waterfalls.
Zara grabbed her communication device. "Emergency alert! We need all thirty-eight artists in the workshop now!"
But before she could send the message, something emerged from the portal. A small, furry creature with six legs and bright orange fur scuttled onto the table. It chirped like a cricket and looked around with curious purple eyes.
"It's actually kind of cute," Kira whispered.
Then another portal opened near Marcus's workstation. And another by the window.
"The other pencils are reacting!" Marcus called out as more vortexes appeared throughout the room. "They're opening everywhere!"
Strange sounds began echoing from each portal—roars, whistles, and clicks from unknown worlds.
