Morning Coffee Dreams
Willow stirred her coffee and watched her husband Marcus flip pancakes at the stove. Their two kids, Emma and Jake, sat at the kitchen table arguing over who got the last strawberry.
"Mom, Jake took my berry!" Emma whined.
"I did not!" Jake shot back.
Willow sighed and divided her own strawberry between them. Marcus barely looked up from the pan.
"Thanks, honey," he said absently. "Can you pack the kids' lunches? I'm running late for my meeting."
Willow glanced at the clock. She had her own job to get to, but she nodded anyway. As Marcus grabbed his briefcase and kissed her cheek, she wondered if he ever noticed how tired she looked in the mornings.
"Love you," he called, already heading for the door.
"Love you too," she whispered to the empty doorway.
Emma tugged on her sleeve. "Mommy, can you braid my hair?"
Willow smiled and reached for the hairbrush, pushing down the familiar feeling of being invisible.
The Baker's Strange Suggestion
After dropping the kids at school, Willow walked past Murphy's Bakery on Fifth Street. The smell of fresh bread usually made her smile, but today she felt too tired to notice.
"You look like you need more than coffee, dear," called Mr. Murphy from behind the counter. The elderly baker had flour in his gray hair and kind eyes that crinkled at the corners.
Willow stepped inside. "Just exhausted, I suppose."
Mr. Murphy wiped his hands on his apron. "My wife felt the same way before our kids grew up. Always tired, never appreciated." He leaned closer and lowered his voice. "There's a little shop two blocks down that sells... unusual remedies. Dr. Chen's place. She helped my neighbor once."
Willow raised an eyebrow. "What kind of remedies?"
"The kind that help people understand each other better." Mr. Murphy winked. "Sometimes folks need to walk in someone else's shoes, if you catch my meaning."
Curiosity sparked in Willow's chest for the first time in months. She thanked Mr. Murphy and headed toward the mysterious shop, wondering what Dr. Chen might have that could help her situation at home.
