The Quiet Corners
Dr. Blue walked down the bright hallway of Sunnydale Hospital, her basket of lollipops swinging gently at her side. Rainbow light streamed through the tall windows, painting cheerful colors across the white walls. Today was annual haircut day, and she could already hear nervous whispers from the children's rooms.
"Miss Strawberry will be here soon!" she called out cheerfully to her young patients.
From the boys' room came groans and complaints. "I don't want my hair cut!" shouted Oliver, his blonde curls bouncing as he shook his head.
"The clippers are scary!" added another voice.
Dr. Blue smiled knowingly. Every year was the same. The girls would line up excitedly, chattering about their new styles, while the boys would find creative ways to disappear. She checked the blanket storage room first - empty. Then she noticed two large blanket boxes in the corner, both suspiciously quiet.
"Apple? Hope?" she called softly. The boxes didn't move, but she caught sight of a small sneaker peeking out.
The Hummingbird's Secret
Dr. Blue knelt beside the blanket boxes, her voice gentle as morning sunshine. "Apple? Hope? I know you're in there."
A muffled whisper came from the left box. "We're not here!"
"The clippers are coming!" squeaked the right box.
Dr. Blue smiled and sat cross-legged on the floor. "You know what? I have something that might help." She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out her phone. "Want to see a video?"
Two sets of curious eyes peeked out from the boxes.
She showed them a video of a hummingbird getting a tiny trim from a gentle woman with short gray hair. The bird sat perfectly still, trusting completely.
"Even hummingbirds need haircuts sometimes," Dr. Blue said softly. "This little one was so brave."
Apple emerged first, his long brown hair falling past his shoulders. "Does it hurt the bird?"
"Not at all," Dr. Blue replied. "Miss Strawberry is just like this kind woman. She's been cutting hair for twenty years."
Hope crawled out too, his blonde curls wild from hiding. "But what if we don't look like us anymore?"
Before Dr. Blue could answer, Oliver burst in, tears streaming down his face. "The clippers are broken! They're making scary buzzing sounds!"
