The Diamond Bridge Challenge
Listen to audiobook
The Sparkling Palace
Anisa adjusted her purple dress as she walked through the Silver Kingdom's snowy pathways. Cherry blossom petals drifted down like pink confetti, mixing with snowflakes in the most magical way.
"This place is absolutely gorgeous!" she said to herself, spinning around to catch falling petals.
The diamond palace ahead sparkled so brightly it made her squint. Ice sculptures lined the walkway, each one more beautiful than the last. A fountain in the center of the courtyard shot streams of water that froze into perfect spirals before hitting the ground.
"Excuse me, miss," called a palace guard with silver buttons on his blue uniform. "Are you here for the royal announcement?"
"What announcement?" Anisa asked, her green eyes lighting up with curiosity.
The guard pointed toward the palace steps where a small crowd was gathering. "Something about the Golden Kingdom. The king seems quite upset about it."
Anisa's smile widened. This sounded like the beginning of an adventure.
The Royal Announcement
Anisa hurried up the palace steps, weaving between people in thick winter coats. At the top, a tall man with a silver crown paced back and forth on the marble platform.
"Citizens of the Silver Kingdom!" King Frost called out, his breath creating white puffs in the cold air. "The Golden Kingdom has broken our sacred Diamond Bridge!"
The crowd gasped. Anisa pushed closer to hear better.
"Queen Sunbeam claims we damaged it first," the king continued, his face red with anger. "Now neither kingdom can cross to trade or visit family!"
A woman with short gray hair stepped forward from the crowd. "Your Majesty, what about the bridge-building contest?"
King Frost's eyes lit up. "Excellent idea, Clara! We'll hold a contest. Whoever builds the best replacement bridge wins the right to control all crossing fees forever!"
Anisa's heart jumped. A bridge-building contest sounded amazing! But something felt wrong about making it a competition between the kingdoms.
"When does it start?" she called out.
"Tomorrow at sunrise," the king announced. "Anyone can enter, but each kingdom gets to pick their champion!"
The crowd began chattering excitedly, but Anisa noticed worried faces too.
