The Long-Haired Problem

Ebony stared at her reflection in the dusty mirror of their gothic bedroom. Her long black hair cascaded down to her waist like a midnight waterfall. She loved every strand of it.

"Edward, come here!" she called to her twin brother, who was sprawling across his coffin-shaped bed.

Edward groaned and sat up, his equally long black hair falling across his pale face. "What now, Ebony?"

"Try transforming again," she said, excitement bubbling in her voice.

Edward rolled his black eyes but stood up anyway. He closed his eyes and concentrated hard. His body began to shimmer, and suddenly black leathery wings sprouted from his back. But that was it. No tiny bat body, no squeaking sounds—just Edward with wings attached to his regular fifteen-year-old vampire body.

"See?" Ebony said, pointing at him. "Same thing happens to me. Just the wings, never the full transformation."

Edward's wings disappeared with a pop. "I don't understand why we need to become full bats anyway."

Heavy footsteps echoed up the stone stairs. Their parents were coming.

The Dreaded Announcement

Their parents, Carmilla and Damien, swept into the room like dark storm clouds. Mother's crimson dress rustled against the stone floor, and Father's cape billowed dramatically behind him.

"Children," Mother announced, her voice echoing off the gothic walls, "we need to discuss your transformation problem."

Edward crossed his arms. "There's nothing wrong with our transformations."

"Nothing wrong?" Father raised one dark eyebrow. "You're fifteen now. At your age, every vampire should achieve full bat form. Your wings-only situation is... embarrassing."

Ebony felt heat rise in her cheeks. "But we like our hair long!"

"Your hair is blocking the transformation," Mother explained, pulling out her phone to show them pictures. "Look at your cousin Vlad's transformation videos. Short hair, perfect bat form every time."

The twins stared at the phone screen showing their cousin morphing flawlessly from vampire to tiny squeaking bat.

"Tomorrow morning," Father declared, "you're both getting haircuts at Willow's Supernatural Salon. It's the best in Grimsley."

"No way!" both twins shouted together.

"This isn't a discussion," Mother said firmly. "Your hair appointments are already booked."
