The Great Crayon Shortage
Listen to audiobook
Morning Rounds
Ms. Crayon Aardvark stood on the observation deck of Crayon Aardvark Tower, her blue mask catching the morning sunlight. The city of Safari Metropolis stretched below her, a patchwork of colorful neighborhoods where humans and animals lived side by side.
"Another beautiful day to protect the city," she said, adjusting her giant blue crayon. The magical weapon hummed softly in her grip.
Her phone buzzed with a text from Mayor Giraffe: "Ms. Aardvark, strange reports coming in. Citizens complaining about missing art supplies. Can you investigate?"
She frowned. Missing art supplies seemed like an odd crime for a superhero to handle. Still, the mayor rarely contacted her unless something serious was happening.
Below, a young hippo child sat crying on a park bench. His mother knelt beside him, holding an empty crayon box.
"That's the third one today," Ms. Crayon Aardvark murmured, spreading her arms wide. Blue energy crackled around her as she prepared to fly down and investigate.
The Empty Boxes
Ms. Crayon Aardvark swooped down from her tower, landing softly beside the crying hippo child. Up close, she could see his yellow t-shirt was splattered with muddy brown streaks.
"What's wrong, little one?" she asked gently.
The hippo mother looked up with tired eyes. "All our crayons vanished overnight. Every single one. Tommy here was so excited to draw his dragon picture for art class."
"Mine too!" called out a young elephant girl from across the park, waving an empty box. "My whole set disappeared!"
Ms. Crayon Aardvark's ears twitched with concern. This wasn't just missing supplies anymore. She pulled out her phone and opened the Metropolis News app. The headlines made her stomach drop:
"CITY-WIDE CRAYON CRISIS HITS SAFARI METROPOLIS"
"ART STORES EMPTY - CITIZENS CANNOT COLOR"
"MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCES BAFFLE POLICE"
Her magical blue crayon began to pulse with urgent light. Something was seriously wrong in her city.
"Don't worry," she told the families gathering around her. "I'm going to figure this out."
But as she spoke, she noticed something odd. A small mechanical drone buzzed overhead, its red camera eye focused directly on her glowing crayon.
