The Great Vine Race
Listen to audiobook
Morning Sounds
Alana bounced on her toes, listening to the jungle wake up around her. Birds squawked overhead while something rustled in the thick leaves nearby. The soft moss under her sneakers felt squishy and damp.
"Ready for practice?" she called to her friend Maya, who was stretching against a twisted tree trunk.
Maya grinned back. "Always! But did you hear that weird creaking sound last night?"
Alana shrugged. "Probably just the wind." She grabbed a low-hanging vine and gave it a test swing. It felt sturdy enough.
The vine jerked suddenly in her hands, almost like it was alive. Alana stumbled backward, blinking in surprise.
"That was strange," Maya whispered, staring at the now-still vine.
The Announcement
Before Alana could say anything about the moving vine, footsteps crashed through the jungle. A woman with short brown hair burst through the leaves, carrying a bright yellow megaphone.
"Attention, young vine swingers!" the woman called out. "I'm Coach Rivera, and I have amazing news. The Great Vine Race starts tomorrow!"
Maya's eyes went wide. "A real competition?"
"That's right," Coach Rivera grinned. "Kids from all over Bumblevine Jungle will compete. But here's the thing—lately, our practice vines have been acting strange. Moving on their own, jerking around. We need brave kids willing to figure out what's happening."
Alana felt her heart race with excitement, but also worry. The vine in her hand twitched again.
