Alana adjusted her diving mask and checked the small oxygen tank on her back one more time. The kelp forest stretched below her like an underwater jungle, with towering green plants swaying in the current.

"This is it," she whispered into her waterproof communicator. Her swim coach had told her about this place, but seeing it was different.

A school of bright yellow fish darted past her face, and she kicked her fins to follow them deeper. The kelp leaves brushed against her purple sports suit as she descended.

Suddenly, a sleek gray dolphin appeared beside her, clicking and whistling. Alana's eyes widened behind her mask. The dolphin seemed to be motioning for her to follow.

"What do you want to show me?" she asked, though she knew the dolphin couldn't understand her words.

The dolphin clicked again and swam in a tight circle around Alana. She kicked her fins to keep up as it darted between the kelp stems.

"Okay, okay, I'm following!" she said into her communicator.

They swam deeper until the dolphin stopped at a clearing. Alana gasped. Dozens of sea creatures were lined up in neat rows - fish of every color, a family of seals, even a giant sea turtle. They all faced the same direction like they were waiting for something to start.

A sleek hummingbird suddenly dove down from above the water, somehow breathing underwater. It hovered in front of the group, its tiny wings beating rapidly.

"Welcome to the annual Kelp Forest Race!" the hummingbird chirped in a voice that somehow reached Alana through the water. "Today's champion wins the Golden Kelp Crown!"

Alana's eyes went wide. A real underwater race! This was better than any swimming competition she'd ever imagined.
