The Color Shortage Crisis
Listen to audiobook
Morning Patrol
Ms. Doodle Cat stretched her arms as the morning sun streamed through the tall windows of her fortress. The crayon tower gleamed bright red and yellow, while the marker tower sparkled with purple and green stripes. She loved starting each day here in the heart of Catburg.
"Time for morning patrol," she said, adjusting her blue and black supersuit. Her utility belt of crayons and markers clinked softly as she walked to the window.
The city below bustled with life. Humans hurried to work while humanoid cats strolled leisurely down the sidewalks. A few big cats lounged in the sunny spots of the central park. Everything looked perfectly normal.
Ms. Doodle Cat grabbed her phone and snapped a quick selfie in front of her colorful fortress towers. "Another beautiful day in Catburg!" she typed, posting it to her social media.
She stepped outside, breathing in the fresh air. Her amber eyes scanned the streets for any trouble that might need her creative powers to solve.
The Gray Wave
Ms. Doodle Cat stepped onto the sidewalk just as her phone buzzed with notifications. Her social media post was getting dozens of comments, but something felt strange. The responses were all variations of "Why is everything gray?"
She looked up from her phone, confused. The city looked perfectly colorful to her. The red brick buildings, the green park trees, the yellow taxi cabs - everything appeared normal.
A humanoid tabby cat named Mr. Whiskers ran up to her, his usual brown stripes looking oddly faded. "Ms. Doodle Cat! Thank goodness you're here!" he panted, his amber eyes wide with panic. "The colors are disappearing from everyone except you!"
"What do you mean?" she asked, but as she watched, Mr. Whiskers' fur shifted from brown to pale gray right before her eyes.
Down the street, humans and cats were turning various shades of gray. A woman's bright red coat became ash-colored. A big lion's golden mane faded to silver.
"It started about ten minutes ago," Mr. Whiskers said, his voice trembling. "First the flowers in the park went gray, then the buildings, then us! But you still have all your colors!"
Ms. Doodle Cat looked at her blue and black supersuit. Everything about her remained vibrant and bright.
