Morning Patrol

Buck stretched his antlers toward the morning sun as he stepped onto Canvas Fortress's observation deck. The city sprawled below him in brilliant colors - red brick buildings, yellow taxi cabs, green parks dotted with purple flowers.

"Another beautiful day in Cervine Metropolis," he said, adjusting his black sunglass goggles. His giant blue paintbrush materialized in his hand, crackling with energy.

His phone buzzed. A text from his wife Luna: "Don't forget - Maple's recital is at 3pm today. She's been practicing her violin piece all week!"

Buck smiled, typing back: "Wouldn't miss it for the world. Love you both."

He tucked the phone away and surveyed the bustling streets. Citizens hurried to work, couples shared coffee at sidewalk cafes, and children played in the parks. Everything seemed perfectly normal.

Too normal, actually. Buck frowned. Usually by now, someone needed help - a cat stuck in a tree, a purse snatcher to stop, something. But today, the city hummed along without a single cry for assistance.

"Maybe that's a good thing," he muttered, though something felt oddly quiet.

The Gray Warning

Just as Buck was about to head back inside, a sharp whistle pierced the air. He spun around to see a hummingbird hovering frantically near his antlers.

"Help! Help!" the tiny bird chirped in a high-pitched voice. "Something terrible is happening in the market square!"

Buck had never heard a hummingbird talk before, but stranger things had happened in Cervine Metropolis. He gripped his paintbrush tighter.

"What's wrong?" he asked.

"All the colors are disappearing!" the hummingbird squeaked. "First the fruit stands went gray, then the flower shop, then the cafe umbrellas! It's spreading fast!"

Buck's stomach dropped. No wonder the city had seemed so quiet. He squinted at the streets below and gasped. Where moments ago he'd seen vibrant yellows and reds, now everything looked like an old black-and-white movie.

"Show me," Buck said.

The hummingbird zipped toward the market district. Buck leaped from the fortress, his red cape billowing behind him as he soared through the air. Below, panicked citizens stumbled around in confusion, their colorful clothes now various shades of gray.
