The Missing Antler Crown
Listen to audiobook
Morning Interruption
Spider Doe stretched her four green spider legs and yawned in her cozy headquarters at Spider Thicket. The morning sun streamed through the tall windows of the tree house, casting dappled shadows across her workbench covered with gadgets and half-finished inventions.
"Another quiet day in Cervine City," she murmured, adjusting her blue mask and checking her phone for any emergency alerts.
Her peaceful moment shattered when the door burst open. Deputy Mayor Fawn rushed in, her usually neat office attire wrinkled and her antlers slightly askew.
"Spider Doe! Thank goodness you're here!" Fawn gasped, clutching her chest. "Mayor Stag's ceremonial antler crown is missing! The Heritage Festival begins in three hours, and without it, the ceremony can't proceed!"
Spider Doe's danger sense tingled slightly. Something felt off about this situation.
"When did you last see it?" Spider Doe asked, standing up and flexing her spider legs.
"Yesterday evening in the mayor's office safe," Fawn replied, wringing her hooves nervously. "The safe wasn't broken into. The crown just... vanished!"
The Festival Countdown
Spider Doe grabbed her utility belt and headed for the door. "We need to examine the mayor's office immediately."
"Wait!" Fawn called out, checking her phone. "There's a complication. The Heritage Festival musicians are setting up right outside City Hall. The entire square is packed with deer families and vendors."
Spider Doe's four green spider legs twitched with anticipation. "That could work in our favor. More witnesses means more potential information."
They hurried through the busy streets of Cervine City. Spider Doe noticed something odd—several deer were wearing makeshift paper crowns, clearly trying to copy the mayor's famous antler crown design.
"Look at that," she pointed to a small deer child tugging on her mother's dress. "Even the little ones know about the crown."
Fawn frowned. "The crown's disappearance isn't public knowledge yet. How could they—"
"Unless someone wanted people to know," Spider Doe interrupted, her danger sense tingling stronger now.
As they approached City Hall, Spider Doe spotted a sparrow perched on a festival banner. The bird seemed unusually focused on the crowd below, turning its head sharply at every movement.
"Fawn, has anyone else been asking about the crown today?"
