The Ink Shortage Crisis
Listen to audiobook
Morning Routines
Ms. Marker Aardvark stretched her long snout toward the morning sun streaming through the tall windows of Marker Aardvark Tower. Her blue and black supersuit felt crisp against her light brown fur as she adjusted her teal gloves.
"Another beautiful day in Ink Metropolis," she said to herself, gazing down at the bustling streets below.
Citizens hurried along colorful sidewalks painted with swirling designs. Street artists worked on vibrant murals that covered every available wall. Shop signs glowed with bright letters advertising everything from Rainbow Pizza to Spectrum Shoes.
Ms. Marker summoned her giant magic marker, feeling its familiar weight in her hands. The golden instrument sparkled as she practiced a few marker blasts into the training targets on her tower's roof.
A gentle knock echoed from her front door. She flew down the spiral staircase, her cape flowing behind her.
"Good morning, Ms. Marker!" called Mayor Paintbrush, a cheerful woman with silver hair tied in a neat bun. "Ready for today's city patrol?"
The Fading Canvas
Ms. Marker opened the door to find Mayor Paintbrush clutching her phone, her face pale with worry.
"We have a crisis!" Mayor Paintbrush said, stepping inside quickly. "Look at this."
She held up her phone, showing news reports flooding social media. Citizens posted photos of shop signs losing their bright colors. Street murals were turning gray. Even the colorful sidewalks were fading to dull concrete.
"When did this start?" Ms. Marker asked, her long snout twitching with concern.
"An hour ago. The Rainbow Pizza sign went completely blank. Then Spectrum Shoes lost all its letters." Mayor Paintbrush's silver hair had come loose from its bun. "People are panicking. Mrs. Bristle, the elderly woman who runs the art supply market downtown, called crying. Her entire inventory of markers and paints has dried up!"
Ms. Marker summoned her giant magic marker and tested it. Instead of the usual golden glow, only a few weak sparks appeared before it flickered out completely.
"Even your marker?" Mayor Paintbrush gasped.
Ms. Marker's big alert eyes widened. Without ink, Ink Metropolis would lose everything that made it special.
