Morning in the Thicket

Sketch Doe stretched her arms above her head, yawning as morning light filtered through the Sketch Thicket. The towering pencils and pens that formed her home swayed gently in the breeze, their tips catching the early sunlight.

"Another peaceful day in Doodle Metropolis," she said to herself, adjusting her silver mask.

She walked between the massive writing instruments, running her gloved hand along a particularly smooth ballpoint pen that stood as tall as a redwood tree. The thicket hummed with quiet energy, just like every other morning.

In the distance, she could hear the familiar sounds of the city waking up—humanoid deer chatting on their way to work, the gentle hum of traffic, and something else. Something that didn't sound quite right.

Sketch paused, tilting her alert ears toward the sound. It was coming from the direction of the pencil factory, the heart of all creativity in their city. The rhythmic machinery that usually sang its steady song seemed to be stuttering.

"That's... odd," she murmured, frowning.

The Gray Cloud

Sketch Doe's ears twitched as the strange stuttering sound grew louder. She launched herself into the air, her dark blue supersuit gleaming in the morning light as she flew toward the pencil factory.

The massive building came into view—a towering structure shaped like an enormous pencil sharpener, with conveyor belts spiraling around its exterior. But something was terribly wrong. The belts had stopped moving, and thick gray smoke poured from several windows.

She landed near the main entrance where a small crowd of humanoid deer had gathered. Among them stood a baker wearing a flour-dusted apron, holding a tray of unfinished cookies.

"The decorating pens won't work!" the baker exclaimed, shaking an empty pastry bag. "I can't finish my morning batch!"

Sketch's heart sank as she looked around. A jogger nearby held up a broken fitness tracker. "My route-mapping stylus died mid-run," he said, confused.

"Everyone's creative tools are failing," Sketch whispered to herself. She pulled out her giant magical pencil, relieved to see it still glowed with soft energy.

Suddenly, the factory's main chimney belched out a massive cloud of sparkling dust that settled over the entire crowd. When it cleared, half the deer's fur had turned completely gray.
