The Pencil Tower Mystery
Listen to audiobook
Morning Observations
Sketch Doe landed gracefully on the highest pencil tower in Sketch Thicket, her silver mask glinting in the morning sun. The wind ruffled her tan-and-cream fur as she surveyed her beloved home below.
"Another peaceful day in Doodle Metropolis," she said, adjusting her dark blue supersuit.
The pencil towers swayed gently around her, their graphite tips gleaming like spears against the sky. Humanoid deer wandered the streets below, chatting with their human neighbors outside coffee shops and art supply stores.
Sketch pulled out her giant magical pencil, its energy crackling softly. She had been practicing new techniques with her techno control powers, trying to fine-tune her connection with the electronic billboards scattered throughout the city.
A small sparrow landed nearby, tilting its head curiously.
"Good morning, little friend," Sketch said, smiling beneath her mask.
But something felt different today. The pencil in her hand flickered strangely, and she noticed the tower beneath her feet trembling ever so slightly. She frowned, pressing her gloved hand against the wooden surface.
"That's odd," she murmured.
The Engineer's Warning
The trembling grew stronger, and Sketch Doe gripped her magical pencil tighter. Below, she spotted a woman with short auburn hair examining one of the smaller pencil towers with intense focus.
"Excuse me!" Sketch called down, leaping gracefully to the ground. "I'm Sketch Doe. Did you feel that shaking too?"
The woman looked up, adjusting her wire-rimmed glasses. "I'm Dr. Elena Martinez, structural engineer. These towers shouldn't be moving like this." She pointed to a crack forming near the base. "Something's destabilizing the entire foundation system."
Sketch tried activating her techno control powers to scan nearby electronic systems for problems. Instead of her usual smooth connection, sparks flew from her gloves and the power fizzled completely.
"That's... never happened before," she muttered, staring at her malfunctioning gloves.
Dr. Martinez pulled out a tablet, frowning at the readings. "The oscillation patterns are getting worse. If this continues, the towers could collapse within hours."
The sparrow from earlier landed between them, chirping frantically and hopping in circles.
"Even the wildlife senses danger," Dr. Martinez said grimly.
Sketch felt a chill run through her fur. Without her powers, how could she protect her home?
