The Poster on the Wall
Jackie pulled her long black hair over her shoulder and glared at the colorful poster on the community center wall. "Annual Harriettsville Hair Day - Fun Cuts for Everyone!" it announced in cheerful letters.
"Not happening," she muttered in her Australian accent, her dark brown eyes narrowing.
Behind her, Ollie's voice cracked with panic. "Did you see that? They've got clippers! Actual electric clippers!"
"Those devils aren't getting near my head," Remi declared, running his fingers through his shaggy brown hair. "I'd rather look like a monkey forever."
Mike and Jacob nodded frantically while Carson backed away from the poster like it might bite him.
Jackie turned to face her friends. The boys all had hair that reached past their shoulders, wild and untamed just like hers. In Harriettsville, most kids kept their hair free and long, but lately the local hairdressers had been getting more insistent about "proper grooming."
"We stick together," Jackie said firmly. "No matter what those sassy hairdressers try to pull."
The boys exchanged worried glances, none of them brave enough to admit their real fear.
The Whistling Warning
The next morning, Jackie's phone buzzed with frantic texts from the boys. She grabbed her red and black jacket and raced to the town square where they'd agreed to meet.
"They're coming!" Ollie gasped, pointing down Main Street. "The hairdressers are actually coming!"
Jackie squinted and saw three young women walking purposefully toward them, each carrying a bright pink toolbox. The one in front had curly blonde hair and was whistling cheerfully.
"Those devils have clippers in those boxes," Carson whispered, backing toward the fountain.
Mike grabbed Remi's arm. "We need to run. Now!"
But Jackie noticed something odd about the approaching hairdressers. They weren't chasing anyone or looking threatening. The blonde one even waved at a little girl playing nearby.
"Wait," Jackie said, but the boys were already scrambling.
Ollie tripped over his own feet and tumbled into the fountain with a tremendous splash. The other boys froze as the blonde hairdresser rushed over.
"Oh honey, are you okay?" she asked, extending her hand to help Ollie up.
Ollie stared at her in shock, water dripping from his long hair.
