An Unexpected Arrival

Mila pushed her round glasses up her nose and turned another page of her favorite book about inventors. The morning sun streamed through her bedroom window in Courdemanche, casting warm light across the glowing pages.

"I wonder what it would be like to meet a real inventor," she murmured, tracing her finger along a drawing of a peculiar flying contraption.

As the words left her lips, the book began to shimmer more brightly than usual. The illustration of a young boy with wild hair and grease-stained overalls seemed to wiggle on the page.

"Whoa!" Mila gasped, nearly dropping the book.

Suddenly, the boy tumbled right out of the pages and onto her bedroom floor with a loud thud. He scrambled to his feet, adjusting tiny goggles perched on his forehead.

"Finally! I've been stuck in that cramped chapter for ages!" he exclaimed, brushing dust off his clothes. "I'm Gus, by the way. Master inventor extraordinaire!"

Mila stared in amazement. She'd brought characters to life before, but never one quite so... energetic.

The Flying Disaster

Gus jumped up and brushed more dust from his overalls. "Right then! Time to show this village what real invention looks like!"

He pulled a crumpled blueprint from his pocket and spread it across Mila's desk. The paper showed sketches of what looked like wings attached to a backpack.

"Behold! My personal flying machine!" Gus announced proudly. "I've been perfecting it for months in that book."

Mila peered over her glasses at the drawing. "Are you sure it's safe?"

"Safe? Of course it's safe! I'm a master inventor!" Gus strapped the contraption onto his back. The wings were made of old fabric and bent wire coat hangers.

Before Mila could protest, Gus climbed onto her windowsill. "Watch this!"

He leaped out with a confident whoop. The wings flapped twice before completely falling apart. Gus tumbled straight down into Mrs. Blackwood's prized vegetable garden with a tremendous crash.

"Oh no!" Mila gasped, rushing to the window.

Below, Gus sat in a pile of smashed tomatoes and twisted metal, looking dazed but grinning. Mrs. Blackwood emerged from her cottage, her short gray hair bristling with anger.
