The Color Thief's Challenge
Listen to audiobook
Morning Patrol
Ms. Paintbrush Axolotl stretched her frilly gill-feathers as she stepped onto the observation deck of Paintbrush Axolotl Tower. The morning sun painted Canvas Zoo City in brilliant hues below her. Skyscrapers shaped like art supplies stretched toward the clouds, while colorful markets bustled with humans and animal citizens.
"Another peaceful day in the city," she said, adjusting her blue mask. Her rainbow cape fluttered in the breeze.
A small bird zipped past her window, chirping frantically. Ms. Paintbrush tilted her head, using her enhanced hearing to catch the bird's distressed sounds.
"Wait, what did you say?" she called after the sparrow.
The bird circled back, landing on the tower's railing. Its tiny chest heaved as it caught its breath.
"The colors... they're disappearing from Sunflower Park!" the sparrow gasped. "First the yellow flowers went gray, then the green grass!"
Ms. Paintbrush's big bright eyes widened. She summoned her giant glowing blue paintbrush, its bristles shimmering with magical energy.
The Wrong Suspect
Ms. Paintbrush soared over Canvas Zoo City with the sparrow perched on her shoulder. Below them, Sunflower Park spread like a gray stain across the colorful district. All the flowers had turned ash-colored, and even the playground equipment looked drained.
"There!" the sparrow chirped, pointing with one wing. "By the fountain!"
A fox with bright orange fur crouched near the center fountain, holding what looked like a paintbrush. Gray droplets fell from the brush onto the remaining yellow daffodils, instantly turning them colorless.
Ms. Paintbrush landed hard behind the fox. "Stop right there, color thief!"
The fox spun around, his green eyes wide with surprise. "Color thief? But I'm trying to fix this!"
"Don't lie to me! I can see you're draining the colors with that brush!"
The fox held up his paintbrush, which dripped with gray paint. "This is restoration paint! Someone else stole the colors first, and I'm a park maintenance worker trying to restore them, but my emergency gray primer is all I have left!"
Ms. Paintbrush hesitated, her giant blue paintbrush wavering in the air. Something didn't add up.
