Morning Patrol

Ms. Paintbrush Axolotl stood on the highest balcony of her tower, watching Canvas Zoo City wake up below. The morning sun painted golden stripes across the buildings where humans and animal-folk lived together.

"Another beautiful day to protect the city," she said, adjusting her rainbow cape.

Her phone buzzed. A text from Mayor Fennec: "Everything quiet this morning. Thanks for keeping us safe!"

She smiled and summoned her giant blue paintbrush. The magical tool glowed softly in her pink hands. Time for her daily patrol.

Flying over the bustling streets, she waved at the zebra crossing guard and the elephant baker opening his shop. Children pointed excitedly as she soared past their school windows.

But something felt different today. The colors seemed... duller somehow. The red roses in the park looked pale pink. The bright blue mailboxes appeared almost gray.

She shook her head. Must be the early morning light playing tricks on her eyes.

The Fading Festival

Landing softly on the cobblestone street, Ms. Paintbrush Axolotl walked toward the morning music festival in Central Square. Street musicians were setting up their instruments, but something was terribly wrong.

"My violin!" cried a sparrow musician, holding up her instrument. "The red wood has turned completely gray!"

Ms. Paintbrush looked around in alarm. The festival banners hung like faded shadows. The bright yellow drums looked pale as old newspaper. Even the sparrow's brown feathers appeared washed out.

"When did this happen?" she asked.

"Just this morning," said a koala drummer, his normally dark fur now a dull gray. "Everything started losing color about an hour ago. Look at the fountain!"

The fountain's blue tiles had turned almost white. The water itself looked colorless.

Ms. Paintbrush summoned her giant blue paintbrush, relieved to see it still glowed with its magical blue light. But when she tried to paint color back onto the sparrow's violin, the paint simply disappeared.

"Someone is stealing our colors," she whispered, her gill-feathers trembling with worry.
