The Blue Spark
Mariza ran across the playground, her brown hair with turquoise streaks bouncing behind her. The autumn air felt crisp against her cheeks as she chased after the red ball with her friends.
"Over here!" called Clover from near the swings.
Mariza turned just as the ball sailed through the air. It struck her temple with a sharp thud. The world spun sideways, colors bleeding together like watercolors in rain.
She hit the ground hard.
When Mariza opened her eyes, she wasn't on the playground anymore. Giant mushrooms towered above her, their caps painted in impossible shades of purple and gold. A blue flame flickered in her palm—small, steady, and strangely warm.
"Oh my!" said a voice nearby. "You're not supposed to be here yet."
Mariza sat up slowly, her head still spinning. A girl about her own age stood between two enormous toadstools, wearing a blue dress and a white apron. Her blonde hair fell in perfect curls around her shoulders.
"I'm Alice," the girl said, tilting her head curiously. "Welcome to Wonderland."
The Flooded Workshop
Mariza stared at the blue flame dancing in her palm. It didn't burn, but it felt alive somehow.
"How did you get here?" Alice asked, stepping closer. Her blue dress rustled against the giant mushroom stems.
"I was playing with my friends," Mariza said. "Clover threw a ball and—"
A loud splash interrupted her. Both girls turned toward a nearby clearing where puddles of water stretched as far as they could see. In the center sat a woman with short gray hair, bent over what looked like dozens of tiny shoes.
"Oh no," Alice whispered. "That's the Shoemaker. She's been crying for days."
The woman looked up with red, puffy eyes. "My workshop flooded! All these shoes need fixing, but the water won't stop coming." More tears fell, creating fresh puddles around her feet.
Alice tugged Mariza's sleeve. "We should help her. But the water keeps getting deeper."
Mariza looked at her blue flame, then at the endless puddles. An idea sparked in her mind. Maybe this strange fire could do more than just glow.
"What if we tried something different?" she said.
