The Crystal Power Crisis
Listen to audiobook
Morning Patrol
Element Artist Rhino stood on his tower's observation deck, watching Canvas Zoo City wake up below. The morning sun painted the buildings in golden hues, and he could see citizens heading to work—humans walking alongside fox shopkeepers and bear construction workers.
"Another peaceful morning," he said to himself, stretching his arms. His blue and black supersuit felt comfortable after years of wearing it, and his red mask caught the early light.
He activated his X-ray vision to scan the city's power grid. The energy crystals that powered everything looked normal from here—bright blue dots scattered throughout the buildings like tiny stars. Each crystal hummed with electricity, keeping traffic lights working and shops running.
A gentle breeze carried the sounds of the city up to him. Car horns honked, children laughed on their way to school, and somewhere a dog barked happily.
Rhino smiled. His job as the city's protector felt easy on days like this. He had no idea that within hours, everything would change completely.
The Dimming District
Element Artist Rhino's communicator buzzed on his belt. He picked it up and heard Mayor Koala's voice crackling through static.
"Rhino, we have a problem," the mayor said. Her voice sounded worried. "The power crystals in the theater district just went dark. The whole block is without electricity."
Rhino activated his flight powers and soared toward downtown. As he flew over the buildings, he could see a patch of darkness where the theater district should be glowing with morning activity. Shop signs flickered off. Traffic lights died one by one.
He landed on the roof of the Grand Theater and used his X-ray vision to scan the area. The energy crystals inside the buildings looked different now—instead of bright blue, they were dim gray, like someone had drained all the power out of them.
"This is strange," he muttered. "These crystals are supposed to last for decades."
A sparrow landed on the theater's sign nearby. The small brown bird chirped nervously and kept looking toward the sky. Something about its behavior seemed unusual, almost like it was trying to warn him about something.
