The Valley Discovery

Ed wiped sweat from his forehead as he scrambled over another moss-covered boulder. The thick jungle air made his khaki vest stick to his shirt, but he couldn't stop now. His green eyes sparkled with excitement as he spotted something incredible ahead.

"No way," he whispered, pulling out his notebook with trembling fingers.

The trees suddenly opened into a vast valley below. Giant ferns swayed in the breeze, taller than any building back home. A crystal-clear river wound through emerald grasslands that stretched beyond the horizon. But that wasn't what made Ed's jaw drop.

Massive creatures moved through the valley like living mountains. Long-necked giants munched on treetops while smaller dinosaurs with colorful crests drank from the river's edge. Overhead, leather-winged reptiles soared between puffy white clouds.

Ed scribbled frantically in his notebook, his pencil barely keeping up with his racing thoughts. This was the story of a lifetime! But as he watched the peaceful scene, a distant rumbling sound made his stomach twist with worry.

The Ground Shakes

The rumbling grew louder. Ed pressed his ear to the ground and felt vibrations under his palms. Something big was happening.

"That's not thunder," he muttered, scrambling to his feet.

A shadow passed overhead. Ed looked up to see a massive pterodactyl gliding above the valley, its leathery wings stretched wide. But this one looked different from the others—smaller shapes clung to its back.

The great reptile swooped toward a rocky cliff face where steam rose from cracks in the stone. Ed squinted and gasped. Baby pterodactyls! Three tiny creatures huddled in a nest built into the cliff wall, their parents nowhere in sight.

The rumbling turned into a deep roar. Orange light flickered from behind the ridge, and the air grew thick with smoke. Ed's stomach dropped as he realized what was happening.

The volcano was waking up.

Hot ash began falling like gray snow. The baby pterodactyls shrieked in terror as rocks tumbled past their nest. They flapped their small wings desperately but couldn't fly yet.

Ed grabbed his notebook tighter. Those babies were trapped, and the lava would reach them soon.
