The Spiral's Secret
Listen to audiobook
Morning Rush
Molly grabbed her backpack and rushed down the apartment stairs. The spiral pendant bounced against her teal hoodie as she hurried.
"Wait up!" her mom called from behind, keys jingling.
The busy New York street buzzed with honking cars and chattering people. Molly loved the energy of the city, even during hectic Monday mornings.
"I can walk to school myself," Molly said, adjusting her purple skirt.
"Not today. I have that early meeting, remember?" Mom locked the apartment door. "Mrs. Chen will pick you up after school."
Molly nodded, though she barely knew Mrs. Chen from down the hall. Her mom worked long hours at the law firm, leaving Molly with various neighbors more often lately.
They walked toward the subway entrance. A man in a dark coat watched them from across the street, but Molly didn't notice. She was too busy watching a street artist juggle colorful scarves near the corner.
The pendant caught the morning sunlight, creating tiny rainbow reflections on the sidewalk.
The Platform Mistake
The subway rumbled beneath their feet as Molly and her mom descended the stairs. The morning rush crowd pushed past them, everyone in a hurry.
"Platform 4," Mom said, checking her phone. "The 8:15 train."
Molly adjusted her backpack straps and followed. The spiral pendant swayed as she walked down the narrow platform.
A woman with short silver hair and sharp blue eyes approached them. She wore a crisp navy blazer and carried a leather briefcase.
"Excuse me," the woman said with a friendly smile. "Are you Sarah Martinez?"
Mom shook her head. "No, sorry."
"My mistake." The woman's eyes lingered on Molly's pendant for a moment. "That's a lovely piece of jewelry."
The train screeched into the station, its brakes hissing. Doors slid open and passengers poured out.
"Come on, Molly," Mom said, stepping toward the train.
But as they moved forward, Molly felt a firm hand on her shoulder. The woman's grip tightened.
"Actually," the woman whispered close to Molly's ear, "I think there's been no mistake at all."
Before Molly could react, the woman pulled her backwards into the crowd as the train doors closed with her mom inside.
