The Golden Trap of Zerzura
Listen to audiobook
Sand and Shadows
Hiccup squinted through the desert heat, watching golden towers shimmer in the distance. The Lost City of Zerzura rose from the sand like a forgotten dream, its ancient walls carved with symbols he couldn't read.
"Stay close, Toothless," he whispered, patting his dragon's neck. The Night Fury purred softly, his green eyes scanning the ruins ahead.
They had been searching for weeks, following old maps and dragon legends. Now, stepping through a crumbling archway, Hiccup felt like he was walking into a story.
Stone dragons lined the entrance hall, their eyes seeming to follow his movement. Hieroglyphs covered every surface, telling tales in pictures he wished he could understand.
"This place feels alive," Hiccup murmured, running his fingers along the warm sandstone.
A shadow flickered at the edge of his vision. Then another.
Toothless growled low, his ears flattening against his head. Something was watching them from the deeper corridors of the ancient city.
The Purple Smoke
Footsteps echoed from the corridor behind them. Not the soft shuffle of sandaled feet, but the deliberate stomp of heavy boots.
"Someone's coming," Hiccup whispered, pressing himself against the cool stone wall.
Toothless, the black Night Fury dragon, flattened his body low and crept toward the sound. His green eyes narrowed as three figures emerged from the shadows.
The first man wore a dusty red turban and carried a curved sword. The second clutched a net made of thick rope. The third, a woman with short black hair, pointed directly at Hiccup.
"There! The dragon boy the old baker told us about," she called out.
Hiccup's heart jumped. A baker? Here in this lost city?
"Run, Toothless!" Hiccup shouted, but the dragon stepped protectively in front of him instead.
The woman raised her hand, revealing a small wooden box. She opened it quickly, and purple smoke billowed out, filling the chamber.
Hiccup coughed and stumbled backward. His vision blurred as the smoke surrounded him. Toothless roared, but the sound seemed to come from far away.
"The dragon stays free," the woman said as Hiccup's knees buckled. "But the boy comes with us."
