The Forgotten Hero's Promise

The Sweet Station
Mariza kicked a sugar cube down the gingerbread platform, watching it bounce across the chocolate-chip cobblestones. The Cookie Kingdom's train station buzzed with excitement as passengers loaded their frosted luggage onto the Vanilla Express.
"Stay here, Mariza," White Lily had said, her red amber eyes serious as she adjusted her white lily staff. "Someone needs to guard the kingdom while we're gone."
Mariza's teal eyes followed her best friend's white braid as it disappeared into the train car. The other heroes waved from windows decorated with candy cane trim. Steam puffed from the locomotive's marshmallow smokestack.
"But I'm ready for missions too," Mariza whispered, gripping her black and turquoise sword tighter.
The train's whistle played a sweet melody as it pulled away from the station. Mariza stood alone on the platform, her white and turquoise cape fluttering in the warm breeze that smelled like fresh cookies. The kingdom felt different now—quieter, emptier.
She didn't know that watching and waiting would become the most important job of all.
The Messenger's Secret
Mariza trudged through the Cookie Kingdom's main square, her boots clicking against the cinnamon cobblestones. The sweet smell of baking bread drifted from nearby shops, but everything felt wrong without White Lily's cheerful voice.
A hummingbird with emerald feathers zipped past her ear, making urgent chittering sounds.
"Shoo," Mariza mumbled, waving her hand.
But the tiny bird circled back, hovering right in front of her face. Its ruby throat pulsed as it made sharp, panicked noises.
"What do you want?" Mariza stopped walking.
The hummingbird darted toward the kingdom's message tower, then flew back to her. It repeated this pattern three times before Mariza understood.
"You want me to follow you?"
The bird shot toward the tower like a green arrow. Mariza ran after it, her cape flapping behind her. At the tower's base, she found a crumpled message scroll with White Lily's seal—a lily pressed in white wax.
Her hands shook as she unrolled the parchment. Three words were scrawled in hurried handwriting: "Help us. Captured."
The hummingbird perched on her shoulder, its tiny claws gripping her cape.
