The Puzzle's Call
Maya climbed the rope ladder to Felix's treehouse, her black cat Sketch perched on her shoulder. The afternoon sun streamed through the windows, casting dancing shadows on the wooden floor.
"Look what I found in my grandmother's attic!" Felix held up an old wooden jigsaw puzzle box, its corners worn smooth with age.
Maya set Sketch down and examined the faded picture on the box cover. It showed tall mountains, green forests, and people in unusual clothing she'd never seen before.
"It's missing pieces," she said, pointing to gaps in the partially completed puzzle spread across Felix's small table.
Felix grinned. "That's the fun part. We get to find them!"
As Maya touched one of the wooden pieces, it felt strangely warm. A soft humming filled the air, and the puzzle pieces began to glow with a golden light.
"Felix," Maya whispered, backing away from the table. "This isn't normal."
Sketch's fur stood on end as the puzzle pieces started moving by themselves.
The Spinning Gateway
The puzzle pieces spun faster, creating a whirlwind of golden light in the center of Felix's treehouse. Maya grabbed Felix's arm as the wooden floor beneath them began to shake.
"We need to get out of here!" Felix shouted over the growing humming sound.
But it was too late. The spinning puzzle lifted off the table, hovering in the air like a golden doorway. Through the opening, Maya glimpsed rolling green hills and a distant ocean.
"Felix, look!" Maya pointed at figures moving in the scene beyond the puzzle. "Those people are wearing strange cloaks and carrying carved wooden weapons."
A tall man with intricate tattoos covering his face appeared in the vision. He held a long spear with decorative carvings and moved with the fluid grace of a warrior.
"Those tattoos tell stories," Maya whispered, remembering something from a book. "And that weapon - it's called a taiaha."
Sketch meowed loudly and jumped toward the spinning puzzle. Before either child could stop him, the black cat disappeared through the golden opening.
"Sketch!" Maya lunged forward, and Felix grabbed for her hand, but they both tumbled through the magical gateway.
What we learned: The Maori people practiced intricate tattoo art called ta moko that told stories about their family and achievements, and skilled warriors used weapons like the taiaha spear.
