The Scent on the Wind
Theo Evergreen pressed his nose against the cool glass of the bakery window, watching steam curl from fresh loaves inside. His stomach growled loudly enough that Mrs. Henderson turned from arranging croissants to smile at him.
"Another hungry morning, dear?" she called through the open door.
Theo patted his empty pockets and grinned sheepishly. "Just window shopping today."
The autumn wind rustled his green cloak as he wandered toward the edge of town. Beyond the last cottage, a narrow path wound through golden trees toward the old stone bridge. Theo had explored most of Millhaven's surrounding woods, but something about today felt different.
A rich, savory aroma drifted through the air—garlic, herbs, something deliciously warm. His nose twitched like a bloodhound's. The smell grew stronger as he followed the path, leading him away from familiar territory.
"That's definitely not coming from town," he murmured, quickening his pace.
The scent was too complex for any kitchen he knew. It reminded him of his grandmother's cooking, but with exotic spices he couldn't identify.
The Humming Chef
The delicious smell led Theo through a grove of birch trees to a clearing he'd never seen before. A small stone cottage sat nestled between two enormous oak trees, with smoke curling from its chimney.
Theo crept closer, his stomach rumbling louder than ever. Through the kitchen window, he spotted something impossible—a massive golden lion standing on his hind legs, wearing a flour-dusted apron. The lion was carefully stirring a pot with a wooden spoon, humming a cheerful tune.
"No way," Theo whispered, rubbing his eyes.
The lion added herbs to the pot with the precision of a master chef. His movements were graceful and confident, nothing like the fierce predator Theo expected. A tiny hummingbird zipped through the open window, hovering near the lion's ear.
"More salt, Mustafa?" the hummingbird chirped in a high voice.
"Just a pinch, Ruby," the lion replied in a deep, warm voice. "We mustn't overseason the stew."
Theo leaned forward for a better look and accidentally stepped on a dry branch. CRACK! The sound echoed through the clearing like a gunshot.
Mustafa's golden ears shot up, and Ruby darted toward the window.
