The Last Gathering

Dan sat cross-legged on the soft grass of Dreamcatcher Drive, watching his friends arrange snacks on the picnic blanket. The street lived up to its name tonight—porch lights twinkled like fallen stars, and the gentle evening air carried the scent of Mrs. Henderson's famous hot chocolate from three houses down.

"Pass the cookies, Dan," called Maya, her curly red hair catching the last rays of sunset. She was twelve, with bright green eyes that always seemed to be planning something mischievous.

Dan reached for the tin, his navy robe rustling softly. The silver trim caught the light as he moved. His twin sister Celia would have loved this gathering, but she was visiting their grandmother across town.

"This place gives me the creeps sometimes," muttered Jake, a freckled boy with sandy hair. He was eleven and always wore his lucky baseball cap backwards.

"Why?" asked Dan, genuinely curious.

"All those stories about dreams coming true. What if you have a nightmare?"

Dan's bright blue eyes sparkled with amusement. "Then don't fall asleep."

The group laughed, but Jake still looked uneasy as shadows began to lengthen.

The Yellow House Call

The evening air grew cooler as Dan reached for another cookie. Maya jumped up suddenly, brushing crumbs from her jeans.

"I just remembered! My mom wanted me home by eight," she said, checking her phone. "Sorry guys, I have to run."

Jake nodded and started packing up the leftover snacks. "Yeah, my dad's picking me up soon anyway."

Dan felt a little disappointed as his friends gathered their things. The peaceful gathering was ending sooner than he'd hoped.

"See you tomorrow at school," Maya called, jogging toward her house three blocks down.

Jake's phone buzzed. He glanced at it and frowned. "That's weird. Dad says he's running late and might not get here for another hour."

Dan stood up, dusting off his navy robe. "Want to walk around while you wait? We could check out the new family that moved into the yellow house."

As they strolled down Dreamcatcher Drive, Dan noticed a woman with short blonde hair standing in her driveway. She wore work clothes and was unloading boxes from a small truck. Something about her quick, efficient movements caught his attention.

"Help!" she called out suddenly. "Someone's taken my son!"
