The Blue Bucket
Kate adjusted her yellow raincoat as she walked through the crowded hallways of Twin Pines Middle School. Her blue bucket clanged softly against her leg, packed with her usual collection of gadgets, spare batteries, and mysterious metal pieces that only she understood.
"Kate, wait up!" called Marcus, her best friend, jogging to catch up. His sneakers squeaked against the polished floor.
"Can't be late for assembly," Kate replied, shifting her bucket to her other hand. "Mrs. Henderson said there's a special announcement today."
Marcus rolled his eyes. "Probably another fundraiser for new cafeteria tables."
They joined the stream of students flowing toward the gymnasium. Kate's green eyes scanned the crowd, noting how everyone moved in predictable patterns. She loved puzzles, and people were just walking puzzles waiting to be solved.
"What's in the bucket today?" Marcus asked, trying to peek inside.
Kate grinned mysteriously. "Trade secrets."
The gymnasium doors swung open ahead of them, revealing rows of folding chairs and a stage decorated with colorful banners.
The Warning
The gymnasium buzzed with hundreds of voices as Kate and Marcus found seats near the back. Kate set her blue bucket beside her chair, the metal pieces inside clinking softly.
"Welcome, students!" Mrs. Henderson's voice boomed through the microphone. "Today we have a very special visitor."
A woman with short silver hair stepped onto the stage. She wore a crisp navy suit and carried a leather briefcase.
"This is Detective Sarah Collins," Mrs. Henderson announced. "She's here to talk about a recent incident involving missing students from nearby schools."
Kate's green eyes widened. Missing students? Her fingers drummed against her bucket handle.
"Three students have disappeared during school hours over the past two weeks," Detective Collins said. "We believe someone is targeting bright, creative kids who stand out from their peers."
Marcus leaned toward Kate. "That's creepy."
Kate felt a chill run down her spine. She was definitely the kind of student who stood out. Her messy ponytail bounced as she looked around nervously.
"We need everyone to stay with groups and report anything unusual," the detective continued.
Kate gripped her bucket tighter. Something about this felt wrong.
