The Crystal Thief Mystery
Listen to audiobook
Morning Among the Clouds
Crayon Doe stretched her legs as the morning sun painted Crystal Cloud Castle in brilliant colors. Rainbow beams danced across the crystal walls, creating tiny sparkles that made her brown eyes shimmer with delight.
"Another beautiful day in paradise," she said, adjusting her shimmering cape.
From her tower window, she could see the entire floating kingdom below. Puffy white clouds drifted lazily around the castle's base, while crystal formations jutted from every surface like frozen fireworks.
A gentle knock echoed from her door.
"Come in," Crayon called.
Butler Bixby, a portly badger in a crisp black vest, shuffled inside with a silver tray. His whiskers twitched nervously.
"Your morning tea, Miss Doe," he said, setting down the tray. "Though I must say, the sunrise crystals seemed a bit... dimmer this morning."
Crayon raised an eyebrow. "Dimmer?"
"Perhaps it's just these old eyes," Bixby muttered, but his worried expression suggested otherwise.
The Fading Light
Before Crayon Doe could respond, a terrible crash echoed from the castle's main hall. The rainbow beams flickering through her window suddenly dimmed to half their usual brightness.
"What was that?" she gasped, leaping from her chair.
Bixby the badger dropped his silver tray with a clatter. "Miss Doe, something's wrong with the Crystal Chamber!"
They rushed down the spiral staircase, their footsteps echoing off stone walls. In the great hall, Crayon stopped short. The massive Rainbow Crystal that usually blazed like a captured sun now glowed weakly, its colors fading to dull gray.
A small hummingbird with emerald feathers zipped frantically around the crystal, chirping in distress.
"Ruby!" Crayon called to the hummingbird. "What happened here?"
Ruby hovered near Crayon's ear, her tiny voice shrill with panic. "The Crystal Keeper is gone! Someone took the smaller crystals from the chamber! The castle's losing its power!"
Through the tall windows, Crayon could see the fluffy white clouds below turning an ominous gray. The castle's rainbow weather was failing.
"We have to find those crystals," Crayon said, adjusting her shimmering cape. "Before Crystal Cloud Castle falls from the sky."
