The Zero-G Rescue
Listen to audiobook
Puzzle Champion
Josh pressed his nose against the massive viewing window of Orion Station. Earth spun slowly below, its blue oceans sparkling with sunlight. Space ships drifted past like glowing fish in an ocean of stars.
"Another perfect score!" called Dr. Martinez from across the recreation deck. She waved a tablet showing Josh's latest puzzle results. "You solved that logic grid in record time."
Josh grinned and bounced on his red sneakers. The zero-gravity games area hummed with activity around them. Kids floated through obstacle courses while adults worked at research stations that lined the curved walls.
"Thanks, Dr. Martinez! Got any harder ones?" Josh adjusted his green hoodie and shifted his small backpack.
"Always eager for a challenge." She scrolled through her tablet. "How about this ancient mechanical puzzle? It belonged to some old exploration crew."
Josh's bright blue eyes lit up as she handed him an intricate metal box covered in strange symbols and rotating rings.
The Floating Net
Josh turned the metal box in his hands, studying the strange symbols carved into its surface. The rings clicked as he rotated them, trying different combinations.
"Fascinating piece," said a voice behind him. Josh spun around to see a woman with short gray hair floating toward him in the zero-gravity section. She wore a patched jumpsuit and had bright green eyes that seemed to study everything.
"I'm Captain Maya," she said, extending a gloved hand. "I run salvage operations around here. Haven't seen that particular item in years."
Josh shook her hand carefully in the weightless space. "Do you know what it is?"
"Old exploration gear. Very valuable to certain collectors." Her smile didn't quite reach her eyes. "Mind if I take a closer look?"
Something felt off, but Josh couldn't put his finger on what. Before he could respond, Captain Maya pressed a small device. A shimmering net materialized around Josh, trapping him in its electric mesh.
"Sorry, kid. Nothing personal. But that box opens something very important, and my crew needs someone with puzzle skills." She activated her jetpack. "Welcome aboard the Starfish."
Josh found himself being pulled through the station's corridors, the mysterious box still clutched in his hands.
