Violet adjusted her goggles and squinted at the tiny device in her palm. The copper coils weren't sparking like they should.

"Come on," she muttered, poking at the miniature circuits with her smallest screwdriver. "You worked yesterday."

The porch light flickered across the street. Mrs. Chen was bringing in her laundry, humming something soft that drifted through the evening air. Dreamcatcher Drive always felt peaceful at this hour, when the sky turned purple and windows glowed warm yellow.

Violet's invention finally sparked to life, casting rainbow colors across her overalls. She grinned and tucked it carefully into her deepest pocket, the one with the reinforced bottom.

A strange whirring sound made her look up. Three sleek silver vehicles descended from the darkening sky, landing silently on the pavement. Doors slid open with a soft hiss.

People in white coats stepped out, their faces hidden behind reflective visors. They moved toward her with purpose.

"Violet Chen-Martinez," one called out in a voice that sounded too perfectly smooth. "We need your help."

The Silver Promise

Violet stepped backward, her sneakers scraping against the sidewalk. The people in white coats moved closer, their reflective visors showing her own worried face.

"We're from the Time Research Institute," the tallest one said. "The year is 2087, and we have a crisis."

"That's impossible," Violet whispered. "Time travel isn't real."

The woman beside him tapped a device on her wrist. Suddenly, a holographic display appeared in the air, showing swirling numbers and graphs. "Our temporal calculations are failing. Past, present, and future are becoming unstable. We need someone with an untrained mind to solve what our advanced computers cannot."

"But I'm just ten," Violet said, clutching her pocket where the rainbow device sat.

"Exactly," the first scientist said. "Adult brains think in patterns. Young minds see solutions we miss."

Mrs. Chen's laundry basket clattered to the ground across the street. The elderly woman pointed at the sky, her mouth open in shock. Three more silver vehicles were descending, but these had different markings.

"Oh no," the woman scientist gasped. "The Temporal Guard found us."

Before Violet could ask what that meant, strong hands grabbed her arms and pulled her toward the nearest silver vehicle.
