Flames in the Dark

Welcome to the Roots
Leo stepped carefully along the mossy path, his orange sneakers squelching softly in the damp earth. The mushroom lanterns cast dancing shadows between the twisted roots that formed walls and doorways throughout Twistedroot Hollow.
"Welcome, young fire-bringer!" chirped a voice above him.
Leo looked up to see a tiny woman with gossamer wings hovering near a doorway carved into a massive root. Her acorn-cap hat sat crooked on her silver hair, and her leafy dress rustled as she fluttered down.
"I'm Pip," she said, landing gracefully on a toadstool. "We've been expecting you."
Leo's amber eyes widened. "Expecting me? But I just wandered in from the forest."
Pip's smile faltered slightly. "The shadows have been growing bolder lately. They watch us from the dark spaces between the roots." She glanced nervously toward a patch of deeper darkness. "We hoped someone like you might help us."
A small flame flickered to life above Leo's palm, casting warm light on Pip's worried face.
The Circle Closes
Before Leo could respond to Pip's worried words, a low rumble echoed through the hollow. The mushroom lanterns flickered as if something had passed between them and their light source.
"What was that?" Leo whispered, his flame growing slightly brighter.
Pip's wings buzzed nervously. "They're coming closer than usual."
A cricket chirped from somewhere in the darkness, but the sound felt wrong—too deep, too hollow. Leo turned toward the noise and saw movement in the shadows between the massive roots.
"Stay behind me," he said, stepping forward.
But as Leo moved closer to investigate, something wrapped around his ankle. The shadowy tendril felt cold and surprisingly strong. Before he could react, more tendrils shot out from the darkness, wrapping around his wrists and waist.
"Leo!" Pip cried out, but her tiny voice seemed to fade as the shadows pulled him backward into the deeper parts of the hollow.
The last thing Leo saw was Pip's terrified face growing smaller and smaller as the darkness swallowed him completely. His flame sputtered and went out.
