The Drawing That Wouldn't Stop
Listen to audiobook
Morning at the Fortress
Captain Sketch stretched his arms as morning sunlight streamed through the tall windows of Sketch Fortress. The pencil towers gleamed silver in the early light, casting long shadows across Creative City below.
"Another day of keeping the city safe," he said to himself, adjusting his silver goggles.
In the kitchen, Luna and Iris were making breakfast while their partners, Star and Dawn, sorted through art supplies. The four deer women had lived at the fortress for months now, helping Captain Sketch protect the creative community.
"Morning, Captain," Luna called out, her antlers catching the light. "Ready for patrol today?"
Captain Sketch nodded and walked to his favorite drawing table near the main window. He picked up a simple pencil and started sketching absent-mindedly on a fresh piece of paper. Just a small doodle—a circle with some squiggly lines.
"Just warming up," he murmured, not noticing the strange shimmer that appeared around the edges of his drawing.
The Paper Problem
The doodle wiggled on the paper. Captain Sketch blinked and looked closer at his drawing. The circle and squiggly lines were definitely moving, growing slightly larger each second.
"That's weird," he muttered, setting down his pencil.
But the doodle kept expanding. Now it covered half the page. The lines stretched and twisted, forming new patterns that Captain Sketch had never drawn.
"Luna!" he called out. "Something strange is happening!"
The deer woman trotted over from the kitchen, her hooves clicking on the fortress floor. "What's wrong, Captain?"
"My drawing won't stop growing." He pointed at the paper where his simple doodle now covered the entire sheet and was starting to spill over the edges.
Luna's eyes widened. "Is that normal for your drawings?"
"Never," Captain Sketch said. He tried to erase part of it, but the eraser had no effect. The drawing continued expanding, flowing like liquid ink across his drawing table.
Through the window, a baker from Creative City jogged past, completely unaware that something unusual was brewing in Sketch Fortress. Captain Sketch watched his doodle creep toward the window ledge.
