The Kelp Forest Detective
Listen to audiobook
Beneath the Glass
Nessa pressed her face against the glass of the marine research center's underwater viewing dome. The kelp forest stretched endlessly below, massive brown fronds swaying like an underwater dance. Fish darted between the towering stems while sea otters played in the canopy above.
"It's beautiful down there," she whispered to Dr. Marina Chen, the marine biologist leading today's field trip.
Dr. Chen nodded, adjusting her thick glasses. "The kelp forest is one of our most important ecosystems. Each plant can grow two feet in a single day."
Nessa's classmates chattered excitedly around her, but she stayed glued to the window. Something about the underwater world called to her in a way she couldn't explain. Her wings tingled beneath her soft blue sweater, responding to her excitement.
"Look at those seahorses!" called Jake from across the dome.
Nessa followed his pointing finger to see delicate seahorses clinging to the kelp stems, their tiny bodies perfectly camouflaged among the swaying fronds. They looked so peaceful, so perfectly at home in their underwater forest.
The Missing Numbers
The next morning, Nessa couldn't stop thinking about the seahorses. She grabbed her phone and searched for Dr. Chen's contact information from the research center's website.
"Hello, Dr. Chen? This is Nessa from yesterday's field trip," she said when the marine biologist answered.
"Oh, hello Nessa! What can I do for you?"
"I was wondering... could I volunteer at the center? I'd love to learn more about the kelp forest."
Dr. Chen paused. "Actually, that's perfect timing. We need help with our seahorse monitoring program. Can you come in this afternoon?"
At the research center, Dr. Chen led Nessa to a cluttered office filled with charts and underwater photographs. "We've been tracking seahorse populations for three years," she explained, pointing to a graph on her computer screen. "But look at this."
The numbers showed a steady decline over the past month. Nessa leaned closer. "They're disappearing?"
"Twenty percent fewer than last month. We don't know why." Dr. Chen frowned. "The kelp forest looks healthy, water conditions are normal, but the seahorses keep vanishing."
Nessa's wings tingled beneath her sweater. Something was very wrong in the underwater world she'd fallen in love with.
