The Night-Shift Kindness Test
Listen to audiobook
The Quiet Rule
Gekko padded across the shiny floor of the PJ Masks play-zone, where posters smiled too wide.
Rarity tapped a hoof on a snack machine. “This place is a mess. I want it tidy.”
“We’re on night shift,” Gekko said, peeking at the empty hall. “Let’s just… be quick.”
A phone on the counter chirped an alarm. The nearby screen flashed: FEAR METER 12%… 14%… 18%.
The lights hiccuped.
From the plain hallway came a cold draft that smelled like old carpet.
Casper floated up, hands raised. “Please don’t shout. It makes it jump.”
The Tile That Sighed
Casper, the pale, childlike ghost, floated into the plain hallway.
Gekko followed, and the floor changed to tiny white tiles like a laundromat. Water puddles spread under his boots.
Rarity snorted. “Gross!”
The phone in Gekko’s hand blinked 22%… 29%… 33%.
A door that was not there before sat at the end: EMPLOYEES ONLY.
Rarity stamped. “I said I want tidy!”
A metal laundry cart squealed past with no one pushing it and bumped the phone. The screen jumped to 41%.
A little sparrow, soaked and shivering, flapped down.
Gekko whispered, “Please.” He held out his glove.
