Seven Tiny Capes, One Big Fix
Listen to audiobook
The Door That Hummed
Crayon Castle’s crayon towers poked into a bright morning like a box of new markers.
On the sky-bridge, Crayon Mother Goat landed softly, her blue cape snapping once.
“Line up, capes,” she said.
Seven kid goats shuffled into a crooked row. Pepper crossed his arms. Dot peeked down at the spinning gear far below.
“We can lift the main gate,” Pepper said. “We can blast clouds. Why do we always get ‘check the bolts’?”
“Because bolts keep you alive,” Crayon Mother Goat said. “Phones out. Castle app.”
Screens lit up. A red banner blinked: TOOTH FRICTION—RISING.
The giant gear under the bridge gave a slow, ugly hitch. The towers shivered. Dust sprinkles jumped.
Dot grabbed the rail. “Mom. That sounded… bad.”
Crayon Mother Goat leaned over and narrowed her eyes. X-ray vision traced the metal. A tiny dark pebble sat wedged between two teeth.
“That?” Pepper scoffed.
Crayon Mother Goat hooked a fingernail at it. The pebble did not move.
Behind them, the gear-room door thumped from the inside—clunk
The Squeak Nobody Asked For
The gear-room door banged open.
A green lizard in a gray window-cleaning harness tumbled onto the sky-bridge, his squeegee clacking on the metal.
“Name’s Squeegee,” he gasped, blinking big yellow eyes. “I was washing Tower Nine and the whole castle did a hiccup. That gear is locking up. When it stops, every door in here slams shut.”
Dot, the creamy white kid goat, squeezed her cape. “Like… bathroom doors?”
“Every door,” Squeegee said.
Crayon Mother Goat’s cape snapped. She tapped her phone once. “Sound Garden, now. The castle grows hush-vines there. Their sap is slick and soft.”
Pepper, the light gray kid goat, lifted his chin. “Or we can just blast the pebble out.”
He yanked his own giant blue crayon from his belt slot and fired a hard blue streak.
The gear shrieked.
The castle app screamed on every screen: EMERGENCY LOCKDOWN.
Shutters slammed down along the corridor as they flew.
At the Sound Garden door, a metal curtain started dropping behind Dot—fast
